What is Pathways?

Most communities have powerful, but untapped, career assets.   There is a growing mentoring movement.  The Harraseeket Foundation has developed the Pathways career mentoring program to support an underused part of it:  communities with the career experience and wisdom to offer the chance for young members to make more informed career choices.  Harraseeket believes that community organizations like Immanuel are ideal for career exploration programs.  The comfort, support and safety of a community like Immanuel fosters quality career mentoring and growth.

Communities such as Immanuel have a responsibility to help their younger members (who we call seekers).  A core mission of community organizations is usually the care and nurture of their younger members.  Younger members are often unaware of, or are reluctant to take advantage of, the career experience and wisdom of older members.  Pathways is designed to change that.

Harraseeket, working with the Immanuel staff and Immanuel’s Spirituality & Learning Committee and Youth Ministries Committee, have developed a Pathways program at Immanuel, calling it “IPC Pathways.”

What IPC Pathways Offers Immanuel

Pathways makes it easy for Immanuel to use content and experience provided by Harraseeket to offer a program of its own. Here’s what IPC Pathways consists of:

IPC Pathways Website

This custom-built website features career exploration content, some of which has been contributed by members of Immanuel.  It includes and will include a variety of resources to engage participants in career exploration.

Mentorship Management System

An online platform where seekers search Immanuel mentor profiles and request conversations with mentors. Participants can facilitate their own matches or request help making a match.

Knowledge Base

Content selected with input from members of Immanuel, such as articles, books, videos, that inspire and encourage career exploration.

Group Forums

A blog, and community events where participants can share stories, ideas, and get advice on their careers.

Pathways at Work

A bulletin board where participants can explore job shadowing opportunities, internships, summer jobs, and gap year options.

We have been running IPC Pathways at Immanuel since the fall of 2017.  Immanuel has a strong mentoring history, having conducted two “Dreamers” programs, in which members mentored students in a low-income area of Washington, DC, and later paid their college tuition.

A Pathways pilot mentoring conversation program started with 24 and has grown to dozens of participants.  Some seekers have had two-three conversations so far.  Eleven members of Immanuel are actively working on different aspects of the Pathways program.  A 13-member advisory board, consisting mostly of young adults, is providing advice to those working on Pathways.

IPC Pathways Leaders

IPC Pathways is led by Steve Parker, a member of Immanuel’s Spirituality & Learning Committee, and Lynley Ogilvie, a member of Immanuel’s Youth Ministries Committee.  Both are also volunteers at The Harraseeket Foundation. Feel free to contact Steve or Lynley with any questions or comments, or to volunteer to help IPC Pathways.

Both committees, and the staff of Immanuel, particularly Pastor Katie and Doug Mar, have been and remain involved in the planning and operation of IPC Pathways.

Several others also have been instrumental in supporting IPC Pathways, including Larissa Dinh, Harraseeket Foundation’s talented Head of Product who designed and built this website; Sarah Erickson, who designed our fantastic logo and graphics; Stephanie Berkin, who works on the mentor database and other projects and constantly provides great ideas; and Dianne McCune, our editor extraordinaire.  Larissa, Sarah, Stephanie and Dianne are all also part of the Harraseeket team. A number of other Immanuelites have given us great ideas and feedback.

IPC Pathways also has an advisory team of 13, the majority of which are Pathways seekers.  (Every seeker also is a Pathways mentor.)
